CLINTON COLUMN FOR SEPTEMBER 25, 2003

Fall is here. I would like someone to tell me when it became "fall" instead of "autumn." At any rate, it has begun, and there doesn't seem to be anything we can do to stop it. I hope that all of you managed all right during Isabel. She really dropped some stuff on my lawn, but no trees fell on me, thank goodness.

Corcoran Gallery on 17th Street, NW will have an exhibit "Bouncing on the Bed: The Influence of Van Gogh's Bedroom Paintings" on Wednesday, November 12, at 7 pm. Cost is $12 for members, and $16 for non-members. After the lecture by Laura Coyle, Cocoran Curator of European Art and specialist on van Gogh, you will be able to view J. Seward Johnson, Jr's sculpture. Corcoran has a lot of new exhibits to enjoy. Call them at 202-639-1700.

Civista Health Center's Chris Stefanides was presented with the 2003 Enterpreneur and Leadership Center's CEO of the year award. During her speech, Ms. Stefanides mentioned how important volunteers are to the work of the hospital. She said "Our volunteers are invaluable as a source of donated time and the fund raising they do on our behalf. Most significant of these are our Foundation, our Auxiliary, and our volunteer Board of Directors."

The Panorama Elementary School PTSA is looking for vendors for its second annual Craft Fair and Flea Market to be held on October 25 from 8 am to 4 pm at 6360 Oxon Hill Road. Call 301-749-4370 for information.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and the American Cancer Society urges women to be informed about the importance of breast health and recommends monthly self-examinations; doctor examinations every year over age 40; and regular mammograms starting with a screening mammogram by age 40. The ACS also has a program to fight breast cancer in which women encourage family and friends to hate mammograms. Call them at410-721-4304 or 410-793-3989.

The American Cancer Society newsletter has an article stating that "Dietary Fat May Lower Resistance to Skin Cancer." Again, it is stated that what you eat may have a lot to do with whether you end up with cancer. 

Surratt House will be presenting the John Wilkes Booth Escape Route Tour on October 11 and 18 from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm. This is a narrated tour. There is a fee and registration is required. Call 301-868-1121.

The Maryland Association of Nonprofit Homes for the Aging offers a brochure that lists housing facilities for the elderly and information on choosing the right option, finances, and more. Call 410-381-1176.

The Epilepsy Association of Maryland has a Learning and Education Resource Center in Towson, where you can get information and videos about epilepsy. Call them at 410-828-7700.

Relationships are hard. It is like a full time job and should be treated like one. If your boyfriend or girlfriend wants to leave you, they should give you two weeks' notice. There should be severance pay and before they leave, they should have to find you a temp.
