CLINTON COLUMN FOR SEPTEMBER 18, 2003
Cliff and Sue Jenkins will be having a Pasture Party for the Greater Black Swamp Land Conservation Group at their farm in Brandywine on September 20 from 11 am to 3 pm. This is for the purpose of an exchange of information and ideas on land conservation in our neighborhood. Protecting our land and water resources is the most valuable gift we can give to now and future generations. Call 301-888-1281 if you are interested in attending this event.
National Association of Retired Federal Employees Chapter 2262 in Marlboro will be holding their next meeting on October 2 at Tucker's Restaurant on Marlboro Pike. A representative of the Greater Baden Medical Services, Inc., Prince George's County, will be giving a presentation on Colon Cancer Screening. If you have any questions concerning this subject, be sure to attend this meeting. Call Lou Perrygo at 301-627-2911 if you need more information.
If you would like more information about the national organization, you can reach them on their website at www.narfe.org. Visit the website and enjoy a sneak peak at the benefits membership has to offer. In the Federal column of the Metro section in the Washington Post on September 2, Stephen Barr explained how hard NARFE works to get benefits for government retirees. If President Bush had gotten his way for the 2.5 raise for government employees, that would have meant our raise may have only been 1% if we were lucky. Since a 4.5% raise has been passed for the employees, we may end up with 2 or 2.5.
A booklet entitled "A consumer Guide For Seniors" has been published by the State of Maryland, Office of Attorney General. This publication highlights many of the common scams and crimes aimed at seniors, and provides useful information about living trusts, medical insurance, and other necessary information for seniors. You can obtain a copy by calling 1-888-743-0023 or go to www.oag.state.md.us.
A series of workshops is being held at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt on Wednesday, September 24, from 6:30 pm to 9 pm. You can learn how new housing and commercial developments are approved, how master plans are prepared, how to be involved in guiding future development in your community, how environmental, transportation, public facility and historic preservation issues are addressed, how to gain easy access to property maps and land-use and planning information, and how to become more involved in parks and recreation programs and activities. There will be children's activities, display booths, door prizes, and refreshments. Call 301-952-3065 for more information.
If you are interested in joining a Democratic Club, please call me, and I will give you information about the one closest to you. The next meeting of a club will be the annual crab feast held by the Ft. Washington/Accokeek Club on September 23 at the B & G Tavern on Livingston Road.
When my family and I go down to Jimmie's Corner Bar to sing Karaoke, we also do some line dancing. For good health and lower cancer risk, you need moderate exercise for at least one hour every day. Line dancing makes an hour fly by, and you can learn new steps and make new friends while doing it. There are many places around our area where you can go to learn and do line dancing. Now that the weather is changing, check out some of these places, and have some fun.
American Legion Post 259 on Piscataway Road has shrimp night every Wednesday. Cost is nominal, and you can get ½ pound of shrimp, hush puppies, and cole slaw. Second Thursday of every month is pizza night, and fourth Thursday is steak night. Call them at 301-868-2550 if you have any questions, or if you want to find out more information.
The Tour Museum, and the other Rural Life Museums at Patuxent River Park are only open through the end of October, so if you have been thinking of coming to see me all summer, better make it soon. Call me if you want to know more.
The contractor of the Eiffel Tower in France, Gustav Eiffel, also developed the interior of the Statue of Liberty.
