CLINTON COLUMN FOR SEPTEMBER 18,2002
Weight Watchers is probably the best program for weight loss, but, as I have found, you have to stick to the program to make it work. Since I have been going to the meetings, and weigh-ins, I have only lost 15 pounds, but I know that, if I would do the program the way I am supposed to, it would be a lot more. I have vowed to continue, even though I keep telling myself I am spending money foolishly, but I will let you know when I reach my 20% loss, if that ever happens.
Over the past weekend, I went to the 20th anniversary of the Southern Maryland Widows Club at the Jaycees in Waldorf. It was a good turnout, and a fun time. If you are a widow or widower, this would be a good group for you to join. Their meetings take place every first Saturday at the Surratts-Clinton Library.
Have you ever been to Tunica, Mississippi? It's the latest gambling place that tourists are invited to, and Nancy, Betty, and I are planning to take a group down November 15 through 20. Side trips will be to Memphis to visit Beale Street, and have a Platinum Tour of Graceland. Then, we will visit the Danny Thomas pavilion at St. Jude's Children's Hospital and watch the legendary "marching ducks" at the Peabody Hotel. Of course, you can always spend as much time at the casinos in Tunica as you want. Price for this trip is only $420.
Before that happens, however, we are having a train trip on the Western Maryland Railway on October 8. The $70 package includes the three-hour train ride from Cumberland to Frostburg, with a 90-minute layover at the Old Depot Restaurant where you can visit the shops in Frostburg and the Thrashers Carriage Museum. Bus transportation is provided, along with a bottle of water and snack bag.
On October 16, we will be going to Baltimore to take a ride on the Ducks. This is a vehicle like those they used in World War II, which goes on land and in water. It is a lot of fun. We will probably be eating lunch at the Harbor before we go out around 3 for a 1-1/2 hour ride. For both of the one-day trips, we try to get home before dark.
There are still boat rides going on at Patuxent River Park through October, but it is always a good idea to reserve a space before you go. Call 301-627-6074.
A garden ball project is being offered by the Basket Bunch of Patuxent River Park on September 19 from 9:30 am to 3 pm inBowie. There is a membership fee and reservations are required. Call 301-627-6074
.
Prince George's County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association is seeking volunteers. Training is provided to become a firefighter or emergency medical technician. Fori nformation, call 301-386-3300 or 877-475-JOIN.
Vendors are needed for Community Day at Progressive Church on Brinkley Road in Camp Springs, which will be happening on October 12 from noon to 4 pm. To register, call 301-449-0237.
The Small Business Empowerment Foundation is holding their third annual Small Business Expo on November 2 from 9 am to 3 pm at Middleton Hall in Waldorf. Vendor spaces are available. Call 877-716-4885.
The Seat Pleasant Chapter of Las Amigas will sponsor a fashion show and luncheon on November 9 from noon to 3 pm at the Washington Navy Yard. Proceeds will benefit the Community Outreach and Education Fund. For tickets, call 301-464-1184.
If you have a friendly pet, perhaps you could see your way clear to becoming a part of Pets on Wheels. This organization seeks volunteers to visit seniors at nursing and assisted-living homes, adult day care centers, and schools for handicapped children. Call 301-853-3330.
Mentors, Inc. needs adults to volunteer five hours per month providing motivated highschool students with encouragement, council and support. Call 202-783-2310.
The reason firehouses had circular stairways is from the days when the engines were pulled by horses. The horses were stabled on the ground floor and figured out how to walk up the staircases.
