CLINTON COLUMN FOR JULY 11, 2002

It seems like we are having a much longer period of heat than usual. I hope that all of you are handling it all right. Aren't we glad that Mr. Carrier invented air conditioning?

Well, folks, I have to say that we do not have to go to New York to see a great play. My daughter, Judy, and I went to the Bowie Playhouse to see the 2nd Star Production of "Guys and Dolls" and it was wonderful. All of those who sang had fabulous voices, and since it is one of my favorite stories, I enjoyed it immensely.

Thanks a lot to those of my readers who came to see me at the Duvall Tool Museum. It was fun to meet you and I hope that many more of you will find your way there some Sunday from 1 to 4. However, I won't be there this Sunday since my big 80th birthday party is happening on Saturday, and I plan to enjoy the Park picnic on Sunday.

Did you know that one-third of all auto accidents occur at intersections? In fact, in 1998, more than four million crashes occurred nationwide at intersections according to a study by State Farm Insurance. Here are some tips for when you are nearing an intersection. Keep a sharp eye for cross traffic in case someone decides to run a red light. Don't assume that the other driver will yield to you. Don't speed up through a yellow light since you have no idea how fast the other traffic will start up. Be careful turning at intersections as pedestrians may be crossing or other vehicles may be stopped. Rear end crashes are common at intersections so it is a good idea to stay a good distance behind the vehicle in front of you. Never change lanes while passing through an intersection. Sometimes storms will cause power outages so be careful if the intersection lights are out. By practicing safe driving, you can reduce your chance of being in an accident. Good luck and have fun with your summer driving.
