CLINTON COLUMN FOR JUNE 5, 2003

Our Rural Life Museum is well on its way to an exciting season. Brenda cooks in the log house on Saturdays and Sundays, the tobacco barn is open for people to walk through and learn about the history of tobacco in Maryland, and one of these days, we hope to have a blacksmith to show you how work is done in a blacksmith shop. Of course, there is also the tool museum, which is where I show people around. If anyone who is reading this knows of a blacksmith who would be willing to help us out, please call me and I will tell you who to get in touch with. And if you would like to know more about the little village in Patuxent River Park, call me. If you want to just head on down there some Saturday or Sunday during the hours of 1 to 4 pm, take Croom Road (Route 382) to Croom Airport Road (the Patuxent River Park sign is right there) and when you get down in the park, there is a gravel road across from the Visitors Center that you take to get to our village.

If you are a fan of the Maryland Choral Society, you can hear them this weekend doing a celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. They will be performing at Christ Church in La Plata on Saturday at 8 pm and Corkran Memorial United Methodist Church in Temple Hills on Sunday at 5 pm. Adult tickets are $18, seniors and students $10.

With the enactment of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, a patient's right to have his or her health information kept private and secure became federal law. Congress took action to ensure that hospitals and healthcare providers protect your health information, privacy and confidentiality. This law goes beyond just an ethical obligation for physicians and hospitals in that it imposes civil and criminal penalties for non-compliance. To make it easier for healthcare organizations to share medical information, the law requires that common transactions, such as submitting a claim on the patient's behalf, be in a standard formal for all organizations and payers. The requirements became effective for all healthcare organizations in April, 2003. Federal law now assures that patients are notified through privacy notices how their information is used for treatment, payment and healthcare operations. This also tells patients about hospital procedures and patients' rights including the right to access their own records and request amendments. Notices concerning this law are posted at all healthcare places as of April 14, 2003.
