CLINTON COLUMN FOR JUNE 27, 2002
Through a program called "Senior Leadership Maryland" the University of Maryland's Center on Aging and the Maryland State Government are working together to match the needs of State Government with the skills of Maryland residents age 50 and up. The program is designed for older citizens seeking new careers as Service Leaders during retirement, and seeks to address key issues in volunteerism by combining lifelong learning opportunities with civic engagement. The program has four components.
During the summer, Maryland residents over age 50 are invited to apply and be interviewed to participate as senior interns in this program. During the fall, the program prepares 25 senior interns with 65 hours of intensive instruction during eight weeks at the university. Topics include legislative and state committees, budgets, public policy, and county and municipal government. Sessions are conducted by UM faculty, and government officials, such as the President of the Maryland Senate, delegates and senators, secretaries of departments, mayors and others. During the spring, the program matches senior interns with government officials who serve as on-site mentors during the 90-day legislative session from January to early April. During the following months and years, continuing training to advance Service Leader careers is sponsored through a Senior Leadership Maryland Alumni Association. Graduates will continue to serve as Service Leaders in the government and as mentors to future senior interns. For further information, contact the University of Maryland's Center on Aging's Director Laura B. Wilson at 301-405-2470.
Are you interested in a facelift? The best candidate for a facelift is a man or woman whose face and neck have begun to sag, but whose skin still has some elasticity and whose bone structure is strong and well-defined. Most patientsare in their 40s to 60s, but facelifts can be done now on people in their 70s or 80s. A facelift can make you look younger and fresher, and may enhance your self-confidence in the process, but it cannot give you a totally different look, nor can it restore the health and vitality of your youth. Before you decide, though, think carefully about your expectations, and be sure to discusst hem with your surgeon.
