CLINTON COLUMN FOR JUNE 26, 2003
Nancy and I took a group to Baltimore on June 12 to ride the Ducks. It was a beautiful day, one of the few we have had lately. We ate at the Seafood Restaurant at the Harbor outside on the balcony. It was a lot of fun, though the Ducks are very noisy, and kind of rough on land. The day before we went, I managed another fall - my kitchen floor was slippery-- and I banged my elbow on a drawer handle, putting a huge hole in it that had to be sewed up. Apparently, I also put a small hole in the side of my head right beside my eye, which caused a nice black eye. My son-in-law told me I should tell everyone I was in a bar fight, so that's what I have been doing, and getting interesting reactions. I believe that I am going to have to do some strength training to see if that could keep me from falling so much. My latest Nutrition newsletter says that strength training becomes more important as you get older to reduce the risk of falling and my daughter, Barbara has been telling me this for a while. Perhaps I should listen.
The Nutrition newsletter also has scores for our diet, which may not be too surprising to many people. We are drinking more sodas, and the only drink that is becoming more popular is bottled water. Dairy products are still popular, especially ice cream, which is fattier than ever if you buy it at Ben and Jerry's or Haagen-Daz. More flour is being consumed and this is causing more pounds to show up on the scales. We are consuming 25 percent more sugar than we did in 1970 and we still eat more beef than chicken and seafood each year. The good news is that we are eating more vegetables and fruits than we used to and the best part is that we are not drinking as much whole milk.
