CLINTON COLUMN FOR JUNE 20, 2002

On June 30, we will again be having demonstrations at our Rural Village at Patuxent River Park. Tim, the blacksmith, will be making things in his shop, Brenda will be cooking in the fireplace at the log cabin, and Tom will be demonstrating the art of carpentry. Of course, I will be there to show you around the Duvall Tool Museum. Please come and visit us that Sunday, between 1 and 4 pm. Come up Croom Road off of Route 301 in Upper Marlboro, and turn left on Croom Airport Road. Within a very few miles, you will come to the Park entrance. Once in the Park, across from the Visitors Center, you will see a gravel road, which leads up to our village.

Boat tours are being offered at Patuxent River Park through August. The tours take place on Saturday at 2 pm and are for the purpose of learning about the wetlands, wildlife and history of the area. Participants should reserve space on the day they plan to attend. Tours are offered for schools, adult groups, and seniors from Tuesday to Saturday, by appointment. The Park also offers canoe and kayak rentals through October by reservation. Call 301-627-6074 for more information.

Corcoran Gallery of Art will be having two bus tours during the month of July. One will be to visit the James River Plantations in Virginia on July 12. This is an all-day tour, where you will visit some of the oldest plantations in the state, the first visit being to the Shirley Plantation, the oldest in Virginia (1613). Cost for this trip is $135 if you are a member, $155 if you are not. On July 26, there will be a bus tour to Philadelphia to visit the Barnes Foundation, enjoy lunch at the Blue Angel, and then visit the Pennsylvania Academy of Art. Members $130, public $160. On June 25,Surratts-Clinton Library will be having puppetime with Sneaks for ages 3-5 at10:30 am. Call 301-868-9200. Upper Marlboro Library will have special summer events for kids with mime Mark Jaster on this same date for ages 6 - 12. Call 301-627-9336. On July 1, Hillcrest Heights Library will be having a chess club for all ages at 7pm. Call them at 301-630-4900. All libraries will be closed on July 4, to celebrate Independence Day.

Know your health risks. Particularly if you are over 50, it is a good idea to visit your doctor before starting on a fitness routine. A lot of people go to the gym without even having their bloodpressure checked. A health professional or fitness expert can help you design a program that suits your needs and abilities. Don't skip stretching. Don't overdo it. Begin slowly, and work up to the best that you can do. Exercise is one of the most important things we can do for our health.

Southern Maryland Hospital Center sponsors evening classes in Yoga at the sports and fitness center. Call 301-877-4806. SMHC is looking for volunteers 14 to 17 years old for its candy striper program, and adult volunteers for office work,guest and patient greeting, and nursing unit assistance. A Cheerleading Competition will be held at North County High School Stadium on October 12 (rain date October 19) from Dawn to Dusk. The North County Knights Parent Booster Club in Glen Burnie, is accepting registration until September 16, or until September 27 with increased registration. Prince George'sHumane Society is looking for volunteers for administrative assistance at dog and cat adoption shows, transporting animals, exercising and feeding dogs at the Spay-Neuter Clinic and more. Call301-262-5625 for more information.

A fitness program for Seniors takes place at Tucker Road Community Center in Fort Washington every Saturday at 8:30 am. Walking, toning, balance exercises, line dance, and more are offered. Participants can register at the start of class. For more information, call 301-248-4404.
