CLINTON COLUMN FOR APRIL 3, 2003

Hope you all remembered to change your clocks for Daylight Savings Time, something most of us wonder why it happens. Many was the time that I forgot and ended up being late for church or choir practice, but now I change my little alarm clock first, and since that is the main one to get me up, I'm O.K. It's so great to see the little yellow flowers and bushes coming out and to see the buds on all the trees, although I cough a lot more when they start.

Tonight is the night for the April meeting of the Brandywine Democratic Club at the Brandywine Firehouse at 7:30 pm. Come and join us if you are a Democrat. If you can't make that one, try to get to the meeting of the Clinton Democratic Club at Mama Stella's on April 8, at 6:30 pm. There is a buffet for $11.

Thanks to everyone who showed up for the wonderful chicken parmesan dinner at American Legion Post 259 on Piscataway Road. The food was great. The next thing is breakfast on Palm Sunday, April 13, from 9 am to 1 pm. They will be having eggs, bacon, sausage, home fries, creamed chipped beef, pancakes, biscuits, toast, coffee cake, muffins, and fruit with coffee and milk to drink. The Legion Ladies Auxiliary are sponsoring the breakfast. Cost is $6 for adults, and $3 for children 6 to 12.

Along with my friend, Rose Hoffman, and my daughter's mother-in-law, Carol Sovine, I enjoyed another great play at the Publick Playhouse in Cheverly on March 22. It was called "The Matchmaker" and it was the same play as "Dolly" without the music. The actors were very good, but I am always sorry that more people do not show up to see these great plays. If you are the kind of person who likes to go to see local folks act, give me a call, and I will tell you how to get in touch with them.

The Corcoran Gallery on 17th Street, is showing a photographic display of street life of downtown Washington, DC. Photographer Joseph Mills lays bare the city's fragile psychology, depicting mental illness, alcoholism and poverty in the midst of the nation's capital. This exhibit is available through April 14. Call 202-639-1770 for information.

From the magazine "Consumers Advantage", I learned that AIDS is not listed in the top 15 causes of death any more according to the spokeswoman for the National Center for Health Statistics, but AIDS is still getting the most money for research from the National Institutes of Health. AIDS reached its peak back in 1995, when it took 51,147 lives, according to the Center for Disease Control. Since then, there has been a steady decline in deaths from AIDS. Last year, there were 709,894 deaths from heart disease, so this is now the leading cause of death in this country. We should fight for more research concerning heart disease.

A stroke support group is available to offer support, education and understanding on the 4th Thursday of each month at 5 pm at Colony South Hotel for individuals who have suffered a stroke and their families. This is a free program. Call 301-583-2400.
