CLINTON COLUMN FOR MARCH 6, 2003
If any of you have come from northern areas, you know that this amount of snow is something that they are used to At least, I was when I was growing up in Pennsylvania. However, it is different to have it when you are older. When I was a kid, having all this snow would be fun, but it is not much fun when you have a problem getting out. Each time we have another snowfall, I say "I hope this is winter's last hurrah," but it doesn't seem to happen, does it?
Although it seems like spring is very far away, it is a good idea to prepare for its arrival. One thing we need to think about is Lyme Disease, which is caused by the bite of a tick. It is not only deer ticks that can cause Lyme Disease, and if anyone in your family has a tick of any kind on them, it is a good idea to check if anything different happens, like a fever or a rash.
Information from Dr. Arthur Brantz - "Every women who is pregnant for the first time hears horror stories about the painful experience of labor. It can be very painful and there are many medical ways to help ease the pain. There is nothing wrong with wanting an epidural or a light sedative to allow you to be more comfortable. But, there is a technique that may also help you to relax and thereby ease the pain. This technique is meditation or deep relaxation. If you are interested, it is a good idea to get a book or a guided meditation tape a few months before your due date. This way, you can learn the techniques and become comfortable with them. It might be a good idea to buy a tape of ocean sounds to go with your meditation, or soft music. This technique is not for everyone, but is simply an option to help you relax during labor."
