CLINTON COLUMN FOR MARCH 20, 2003

At the Brandywine Democratic Club, and again at the Clinton Democratic Club meeting this month, Carl Ruble told us all about the new development proposals that are under consideration for approval by the Park and Planning Commission. Most of you who are Clinton or nearby residents have already seen the action going on at the Dennison property just below Thrift Road. Construction is underway for 45 units on 18 acres. Along with that, there are now proposals for 289 units on 245 acres along the western side of Branch Avenue behind the Methodist Church (4-03003); 94 units on 46 acres on Brandywine Road between Piscataway Creek and Kaine Drive (4-02106); 403 units on 518 acres west of Burch Hill Road, past Marbury Road, south on Brandywine Road, and west to Piscataway Road (4-02126); and 211 units on 193 acres on the north side of Floral Park Road, 1800 feet west of Brandywine Road, with access on Floral Park Road. If any of these proposals are of interest to you, you can become a "person of record" by sending your name and address to Prince George's Planning Board, County Administration Building, 4th Floor, Upper Marlboro, MD 20772 and stating the application number you are interested in. Before long, there will be no rural area around here.

The Surratts-Clinton Democratic Club had an extremely lively meeting this month, with much discussion about things that are going on in the Clinton area. If you are a Democrat, and are especially sorry about what happened in the last election, please think about joining us in April. The meetings are always on the second Tuesday at Mama Stella's on Branch Avenue. For $11, you get a nice buffet, plus an interesting meeting.

There are also Democratic Clubs in Mt. Rainier, Upper Marlboro, Kettering, and Oxon Hill. If one of these is of interest to you, call me, and I will tell you who to get in touch with.

Be sure to take advantage of the chicken parmesan dinner, with white elephant and bake sales at the Clinton American Legion Post 259 on Piscataway Road this coming Saturday, the 22nd. Price is $7, children 6 to 12 $3. Call 301-868-2550 if you need any more information.

The Maryland Choral Society will be performing their spring concert twice, once on March 22, at 8 pm at Oxon Hill United Methodist Church on Livingston Road and at 5 pm at Bethany Christian Church on Allentown Road on March 23. For ticket information, call 301-961-7131.

The National Law Enforcement Officers memorial Fund is inviting everyone to visit the Fallen Officers' section on their web site to learn more about the officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. You can see photos and get information about how to search for a particular officer, learn the criteria for adding new names to the Memorial, get information about ordering a wreath, and give personal tributes to officers. The website is www.nleomf.com. Their telephone number is 202-737-3400.

Dates for the AARP driver safety course in April are April 2and3 in Accokeek at Faith United Methodist Church on Accokeek Road (call 301-292-3274), April 14 and 15 at Bowie Senior Center (call 301-809-2300), April 14 and 15 at Glen Arden Baptist Church (call 301-773-3600).

If you are the kind of person who does not like to cook, and/or lives alone ,like me, perhaps you are a proponent of frozen meals. Some ideas, if you decide to buy them, are to look for meals that have the most vegetables, read the Nutrition facts panel and compare different brands, and then supplement your meal with other healthful foods. Of course, you can always freeze your own meals by cooking more than you need for one.

The winter of 1932 was so cold that Niagara Falls froze completely solid (and you thought this winter was cold!).
