CLINTON COLUMN FOR MARCH 13, 2003

Looks like some little green stuff is popping up so maybe spring is on its way, after all. I, for one, am glad to see the snow begin to disappear, and I hope that means we won't be having a drought this summer.

National Association of Retired Federal Employees Southern Prince George's County Chapter1260 will be meeting on March 20 at the Surratts Clinton Library on Piscataway Road at 1 pm. Our state Federation President, Ron Bowers, will be our guest speaker. Call 301-292-5882 if you need more information.

Be sure to take advantage of the St. Patrick's Day dinner at the Clinton American Legion on Piscataway Road on March 17, from 5 to 7:30 pm. Cost is $7 per person, and there will be corned beef or ham with cabbage, boiled red potatoes and carrots and corn, along with bread and butter. They have great cooks at the Legion. I know because I go up there for shrimp many Wednesdays. If you need to call, the number is 301-868-2550.

On March 22, the same Legion Post 259, will have a chicken parmesan dinner with a white elephant table and bake sale, to benefit the Clinton Fire Department. Time is 4 to 8 pm and the cost is $6 in advance, $7 after March 16. Children 6 to 12 pay $3. Call May Whittington at 301-868-1686 if you need more information.

Post 259 will be holding a Special Bingo on Sunday, April 6 at 1 pm, to support the Post and Southern Maryland District's Candidate for Department First Vice Commander, Elbert D."Ed" White. There will be a total of 25 games. Early Bird cost is $50, regular games will be $100, special games $125, with a guaranteed jackpot of $800. For advanced ticket and reserved seating, call John Joyner at 301-868-6855

Chapter 2262 of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees meets the first Thursday of the month at Tucker's Restaurant on Marlboro Pike in Upper Marlboro, at 12 noon, with a buffet lunch, and I am sorry I did not get the notice in time this month to let you know. However, the Secretary was kind enough to give me some news any of you are retired federal employees may be interested in, such as if you want to send your thanks to our military force for all their work, you can log on to www.defendamerica.mil/nmam.html. Once you sign in, your name is added to the list of names and will be sent out to our soldiers at the end of the month.

If you are a member of NARFE, your child or grandchild can join the contest for a scholarship by filling out the application in March, April, or May's Retirement Life magazine.

Some of the legislation that the State Legislative Committee, chaired by Frank Chase, is continuing to press the priority issues in the General Assembly Session, one of which is to equalize the personal exemption for all at age 65 and to increase the amount of retirement income excludable from State taxation. Both of these bills were introduced by Senator Leo Green and Delegate Mary Conroy. If you would like to write a letter, or send an email, call me and I will give you the information you need to do so. National Lobby Day is March 18, and there is a special toll-free number you can use if you want to call your representatives and/or senators about this legislation.

For one day only, March 18 is being established as our lobby day, when NARFE members can call 1-800-861-1822 for your representative or senator on what is being called National Lobby Day. Primary consideration should be given to Premium Conversion bills to allow annuitants to pay their FEHBP premiums with pre-tax dollars, and support for bills to repeal or modify the Social Security Government Pension Offset as well as the Windfall Elimination Provision. The number will only be available from 9 am to 4 pm.

The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, and will have a special exhibit "Fighting the Fires of Hate" beginning April 30, which addresses the Nazi book burnings. The exhibit on Anne Frank will open on June 12. In September, there will be an addition titled "Life in Shadows: Hidden Children and the Holocaust." You can call 202-488-6189 or log on to ushmm.org for more information.

A 55-Alive Driving Course will be held March 18 and 19 in Hyattsville at the Rollingcrest/Chillum Recreation Center. Call 301-345-5445 to register.

New word for you: The grooved plug in the end of a whistle is a fipple.
