CLINTON COLUMN FOR FEBRUARY 6, 2003
By the time you read this, we will all know if Punxatawney Phil has seen his shadow, and we are in for another six weeks of winter, or not. Ha. Ha. Do you believe that stuff? When I was a child, I believed it because my father said it was true, but then the strangest thing happened. One year, when I was in my twenties, it did not turn out to be correct, and that was when I quit believing in Phil.
Lieutenant Andrew Anewenter of the Milwaukee Police Department, has been chosen as the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund Officer of the Month for December 2002. Lieutenant Anewenter and his partner, Officer Norman Duemling, were transporting two suspects back to the station when one of the two grabbed Officer Duemling's gun, pressing the barrel into his abdomen, threatening to kill him. Officer Anewenter shot the gunman in the head, saving Officer Duemling's life. Officer Duemling died in 1957 after a long successful law enforcement career. Lieutenant Anewenter is probably the oldest active duty law enforcement office in the nation, and at 86 years young, has no immediate plans to retire. If you would like to read more about this officer, long on to www.nleomf.com, and click on "Officer of the Month."

We describe a distraught person as being "beside himself" because the ancients believed that soul and body could part and that under great emotional stress the soul would leave the body.
