CLINTON COLUMN FOR JANUARY 9, 2003

Tonight is the night you can join the Brandywine Democratic Club for the annual installation of officers, and a great potluck dinner. If you are interested, and you don't yet belong to the club, come at 7 pm and join us for the election and the dinner. We will also be having two auctions, one live, and one silent. Bring a friend.

On January 14, you can join the Surratts-Clinton Democratic Club at Mamma Stella's on Old Branch Avenue for the January meeting at 6:30 pm. The National Association of Retired Federal Employees Chapter 1260, Southern Prince George's County Chapter 1260, will be holding its monthly meeting at 1 pm on January 16, at the Surratts-Clinton Library on Piscataway Road. Terry Rheinhart, Tax Consultant, will be telling us about anything new in the tax line, and will be there to answer any questions you might have. Even if you do not belong to the chapter or the organization, you are welcome to come to the meeting to hear Terry.

On January 18, the Celtic Society of Southern Maryland will sponsor the 7th annual Robert Burns Night of dining, dancing, and Scottish entertainment with a social hour at 5:30 pm and dinner at 6:30. There is a fee and reservations are required. Call 301-737-2334 for more information.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Maryland Chapter will hold a team captain rally on February 11 at Towson High School at 6:30 pm to get ready for the MS Walk in April and the Chesapeake Challenge Bike Tour in May. For Information and to make reservations, call 1-800-FIGHT-MS, ext. 150.

The Southern Maryland Association of Realtors is offering a Principles of Real Estate Class on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 pm and Saturdays at 9 am from January 7 to March 4. There is a fee for this class. For more information, call 888-340-8727 or 301-274-4406.

The Annapolis Center in Annapolis is collecting pre-paid telephone cards for military personnel overseas to call their families and friends. Calling cards designated for overseas use are preferred. Call 410-268-3302.

South County Senior Center is offering a How to Speak Piano program, with discussions on the history of the piano and the lives of composers and pianists on January 30, February 6, 13, and 20 at 1 pm. This is a free program, but registration is required. Call 410-222-1927 or 410-798-4802.

A hands-on workshop will happen on January 11 at the U.S. Arboretum so you can learn how to wire bonsai. The class is from 1 to 4 pm and there is a fee. To register, call 202-245-5898.

Christmas in April is still looking for donations of materials and supplies, including lumber, paint supplies, and appliances, as well as electrical, plumbing and roofing materials, to get ready for its home repair day on April 26. Storage is available. Call 301-868-0937.

The Internal Revenue Service is offering publications to assist taxpayers regarding charitable donations, including publication 526, Charitable Contributions, and 561, Determining the Value of Donated Property. Call 800-TAX-FORM.

Recycle your Christmas tree on January 18 at the Charles County Landfill on Billingsley Road, the Park and Ride at St. Nicholas Drive on Route 205, Pinefield Park on Pinefield Road, Calvary Gospel Church on Route 228, Charles County Courthouse parking lot on Washington Ave, and Radio Station Road across from Laurel Springs Park.
