CLINTON COLUMN FOR JANUARY 30, 2003

Some interesting information about the Super Bowl is available in the latest Pennysaver. In the first Super Bowl (called "the AFL-NFL World Championship Game"), the Green Bay Packers defeated the AFL-champ Kansas City Chiefs 35-10 in front of 61,946 fans at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The Packers have captured the most NFL titles (12) in National Football League history. The NFL did not start using roman numerals to identify the Super Bowl until V, adopted to clarify any confusion that may occur because the game is played in January of the next year following a chronologically recorded season. Washington's Doug Williams, Oakland's Jim Plunkett and new York's Phil Simms all produced career-best games while quarterbacking their teams to Super Bowl victories. The game is regularly among the most-watched TV programs of the year. The Super Bowl holds seven of the top 10 positions on the list of most-watched programs of all time. At least 10 million people watch the game in groups of 10 or more.

Newsletter from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation says that we have juvenile bald eagles from New England flying south to winter at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Caledon Natural Area on the Potomac, Horsehead Bluffs and Fones Cliffs on the Rappahannock, and to Powell Creek on the James. We also have juvenile croakers and juvenile and young adult rockfish which overwinter in the Bay, but sometimes die if it gets too cold. If you are interested in the environment, and would like to help the Chesapeake Bay, log on to www.cbf.org. According to the most recent report, the Bay's health rates only 27 out of 100. The organization is working to change that by reducing pollution, restoring habitat, and replenishing the fish stocks. However, this cannot be done unless everyone does their share. Some of the things you can do are to drive less, plant a tree, and conserve water.
