CLINTON COLUMN FOR DECEMBER 25, 2003
Hope all of my readers are having a Merry Christmas, if that is what you celebrate, Happy Chanukah if you celebrate that way. And I am definitely wishing all of you a wonderful 2004. For most of you, and for me, the Christmas parties are all over. I have not had the nerve to get on a scale yet, but I am sure there is at least one extra pound there.
Bad news, everyone. It seems that Dr. Dobson has informed the Lions Club that he is just not up to meeting his grateful public, so they have had to cancel the December 8th Appreciation Day. I don't know how many of you were looking forward to letting Dr. Dobson know how you feel, but I certainly was ready to do so. Let's hope it will be rescheduled.
Although the Bible describes the birth of Christ, there is no particular date mentioned, but for those of you who celebrate Christmas as Jesus' birthday, you might like to know that it began as a solemn, religious celebration. Prayer and spirituality were emphasized over colorful theatrics. Soon nonreligious ideas of decorations, gift giving, and feasting, however, became popular. During the reformation of the English churches in the 17th century, some church leaders tried to outlaw Christmas. They believed that the Pagan ideas of evergreen, holly, mistletoe, gifts, and special meals corrupted the meaning of Christmas. However, it only took a little while before people began celebrating again with gifts, etc. To me, it is an excuse to get together with my family, sing songs of celebration, and enjoy gift giving with those I love.
