CLINTON COLUMN FOR JANUARY 17, 2003

Brandywine Democratic Club had a wonderful installation night at the Brandywine Firehouse on January 9. Our Senator, Mike Miller, and Delegates Jim Proctor and Joe Vallario joined us for our fun evening. As always, the food was great, but let's face it, potlucks are always great. If you are a Democrat, and you would like to get involved in the party, please join us on the first Thursday of February at the Firehouse at 7:30 pm.

Recently, I received wonderful news that the Maryland state Board of Public Works voted unanimously to protect 25,000 acres in Southern Maryland and on the Eastern Shore. This Board, consisting of Governor Glendening, Comptroller Donald Schaefer, and Treasurer Nancy Kopp, approved the use of $12 million in GreenPrint bond funds and $3.4 million in Program Open Space funds to acquire conservation easements that will protect land in Somerset, Wicomico, Worcester, Dorchester, Charles and St. Mary's counties. This will extinguish development rights and help to permanently protect the water quality and natural resources of the region.

Chesapeake Bay Foundation President Will Baker testified before the Board, stating "An opportunity to protect this much forested, environmentally sensitive land in one of America's fastest growing regions comes once in a lifetime, and the choice made today will benefit the Bay for generations to come. It is easy to be a friend of the environment when there is money to go around. The true test comes when we must maintain this commitment during times of fiscal uncertainty."

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund announced the selection of Montgomery County Chief of Police Charles A. Moose as Officer of the Month for November 2002. Chief Moose has long been a highly respected figure in law enforcement circles, but the tragic serial murders of 10 people in our area thrust him into the national spotlight. He successfully coordinated a joint federal and multi-state investigation into the deadly attacks that terrorized this area. If you would like to read more about Chief Moose, go to www.nleomf.com and click on "Officer of the month: November 2002."
