CLINTON COLUMN FOR NOVEMBER 28, 2002

It is my hope that you all start off the holidays with a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family and friends.

As usual, we had a great meeting at our National Association of Retired Federal Employees Chapter 1260 this past week. If you are a federal employee, or a retired federal employee, you would have received a lot of information about the Open Season. 

Historic Surratt House Museum on Brandywine Road will present its 27th Annual Victorian Yuletide by candlelight on December 14, 15, and 16. They will feature the popular Civil War Santa as well as costumed docents and Union and Confederate sentries. Candlelight tours will be featured and festive greenery, antique dolls and toys, greeting cards, and ornaments of the 19th century will be on display. The tours will be held on Saturday, December 14, and Sunday, December 15 from 5 pm to 9 pm and Monday, December 16, from 6 pm to 9 pm. A Dickens Christmas is being offered by His Lordship's Kindness on Woodyard Road with entertainment and music on December 7 from 6 to 10 pm. There is a fee and reservations are required. For information, call 301-856-0358.

Clinton Baptist Church will be having a "Hanging of the Green" Service on December 1 at 11 am. Call 301-868-1177.

Brandywine Democratic Club will be having their Christmas party at the Brandywine Firehouse on December 5, at 7:30. We plan to have a good time with an auction and potluck dinner. If you want to join us, let me know.

Union Bethel and Intergenerational Center on Brinkley Road is offering church school at 8:45 am and worship at 10 am on Sundays, intercessory prayer at 6 pm and Bible study at 7 pm on Tuesdays. Sister's Keeper Resource Center in Ft. Washington, is seeking donation of a space to meet clients and for monthly meetings. This organization is also looking for board members who will commit to the second Saturday of each month for one year and to the organization's mission of helping single mothers and their families. The American Cancer Society is urging women to be informed about the importance of breast health and is recommending monthly self-examinations, doctor exams every year over age 40, and regular mammograms, starting with a screening mammogram by age 40. The Chesapeake Wildlife Sanctuary is again offering programs for grades K to 12. A classroom slide show, lesson plans and follow-up activity suggestions are provided. Call 301-390-7010.

A Holiday Doll House exhibit, featuring a 4 by 8 foot scale model doll house decorated in the spirit of the season is being hosted by the Annapolis Maritime Museum until February 2, 2003. The display is next to the café at McNasby's on 2nd Street in Eastport. Hours are from 11 am to 6 pm Thursdays and Fridays and 11 am to 8 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
