CLINTON COLUMN FOR NOVEMBER 27, 2003
Happy Thanksgiving Day. I hope everyone is enjoying the day with their family and friends. I know I will be, and it is definitely a day I look forward to all year.
Have you been to the new Ruby Tuesday's? Looks like it is just going to be like all the restaurants in Waldorf, crowded.
The Fort Washington/Accokeek Democratic Club had Bob Weiner as their speaker this month, and he did a very dynamic presentation of what we need to do as Democrats to take back control of our government.
The American Cancer Society has again backed up the information that eating vegetables and fruit is the answer to how to keep away cancer. Whole grains and beans are also very important. This year, a major study confirmed what experts have said, that eating a high-fiber diet - 35 grams a day - does indeed lower cancer risk. Of more than half a million people studied across Europe, the ones who ate the most fiber had 40 percent less colorectal cancer than those who ate only 15 grams a day. Some previous American studies had shown no link between eating fiber and lower cancer risk. But the highest fiber consumption in the American studies equaled the lowest amount in the European studies.
Our stretching/flexibility classes are over for a while, but if you would like to join us, please show up Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday, after December 1. We are still meeting at the Baptist Church in Clinton, on Woodyard Road, from 8:30 to 10 am. It is a great class; we have a wonderful teacher, and lots of laughs. The class is directed toward seniors, and will help you stay flexible so that falls won't be as dangerous.

Women Taking Care of Business is sponsoring a shopping trip to New York City with a continental breakfast, raffles and movies on the bus, on December 6, leaving at 5 am from Sunderland Park and Ride and 6 am from Forestville. There is a fee and paid registration is necessary. Call 301-735-0313, 301-877-2685, or 301-853-6227 (by November 28).
St. Thomas Episcopal Parish is holding their craft bazaar on December 6 and 7 in the church hall at 14300 St. Thomas Church Road in Croom. Spaces/tables are available. Call 301-888-1387 or 301-627-3260 for information.
Tables are available for selling jewelry, minerals, and fossils at the Southern Maryland Rock and Mineral Club's 14th Annual Jewelry, Mineral and Fossil Show on Saturday and Sunday, March 27 and 28, 2004. Show hours will be 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday and 11 am to 5 pm on Sunday. This show will be taking place in the large multipurpose room of Harmony Hall Regional Center in Fort Washington. There is a $60 registration fee with additional tables to be rented for $50. Items for sale should be gem, lapidary, jewelry, rock, mineral or fossil related. The Rock and Mineral Club meets in the Clearwater Nature Center auditorium at 7:30 pm on the fourth Tuesday of each month. A series of informative speakers is scheduled, along with special field trips. Everyone is welcome to join in this fascinating hobby.
Almost every weekday morning, free tissues are handed to the commuters in front of Japan's rail and bus stations. The tissues are distributed by workers of the companies whose messages and advertisements are printed on the packages. The reason for this is that most public bathrooms do not have paper towels or toilet paper.
