CLINTON COLUMN FOR NOVEMBER 14, 2002

A big thank you to all of our service people who have and are working to keep our country free. And, along with them, thanks to all of our police officers and firefighters who are working every day to see that our streets and homes are safe.

The transfer station that was planned for Dower House Road has been turned down, and we have to thank Senator Mike Miller, Delegates Vallario and Proctor, Congressman Steny Hoyer, and Mr. Stephen Pierce for working so hard to get this project abandoned. This would have been a really terrible project for the area. Let's hope they can find somewhere else that will not be around people's homes. We all know that it is needed.

The next meeting for National Association of Retired Federal Employees Chapter 2262, of Upper Marlboro, will be December 5, at Tucker's Restaurant on Old Marlboro Pike at 1 pm. There is usually a cold buffet before the meetings, but since it will be the Christmas celebration, it will be a hot luncheon instead. Call Marlene Pace at 301-599-8588 if you want to attend the Christmas meeting and luncheon.

NARFE's 27th Convention was held in Greensboro, NC, in late September. The delegates approved resolutions reaffirming NARFE's commitment to retirement income security and health care for current and retired Federal civil servants. These included continued support for allowing Federal retirees to pay their share of FEHBP with pre-tax dollars; support for COLA equity for Federal retires; objective consumer price index analysis; consumer rmanaged care "Bill of Rights", and repeal of the Windfall Elimination. NARFE is working hard for us. Let's support the organization in any way we can.

The game "Ring Around the Rosie" came from a rhyme about the Bubonic Plague. Infected people got red circular sores (ring around the rosie). The sores would smell bad so people hid flowers on their bodies (pocket full of posies). People who died would be burned to reduce the spread of the disease (ashes, ashes, all fall down).
