CLINTON COLUMN FOR NOVEMBER 13, 2003
At the Brandywine Democratic Club meeting on November 6, we enjoyed a presentation by Shaihi Mwalimu, who is Vice Chair of the Citizen Complaint Oversight Panel. This is a group of people who oversee complaints about the police department. The panel has seven members altogether. He told us that complaints range from abusive language to discharge of firearms unnecessarily, as well as other behavior that is considered unbecoming. Sometimes, the complaints are about physical abuse, sometimes emotional. . The panel now has authority to subpoena and/or investigate, so this means that you do not have to take any kind of abuse from a police officer. Mr. Mwalimu is also the President of the Surratts-Clinton Democratic Club, which meets at Mama Stella's, usually the second Tuesday of each month.
Southern Prince George's County Chapter 1260 of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees will be meeting on November 20, at the Clinton Library on Piscataway Road at 1 pm. Southern Maryland Hospital Center has recently acquired a LightSpeed 16 CT scanner that provides highly detailed images of the human body. According to Dr. Gary Staples, SMHC is the first medical facility in the area to offer our patients this state of the art, innovative technology. The LightSpeed 16, which is manufactured by GE Medical Systems, allows doctors to simultaneously capture multiple wafer-thin images of a patient's anatomy within seconds, shaving precious minutes off the exam time. The system provides exceptionally high-resolution images that help doctors to more accurately diagnose patients than ever before. Dr. Staples said the LightSpeed 16 will provide vastly improved image quality, an entry into new applications such as CT angiography, cardiology, CT colonography, and an overall enhanced diagnostic confidence on all the studies.
