CLINTON COLUMN FOR OCTOBER 30, 2003
Happy Halloween to everyone. I remember many fun times when I was younger, and it's too bad the children can't have the same type of holiday, but that's the way it is. We must be much more careful these days.
Even though it is a little cold, Clearwater Nature Center still has their wonderful family campfires. For November, it will be November 8, from 1 to 2:30 pm, Friday, November 14, from 7:30 to 9 pm, and Saturday, November 22, from 1 to 2:30 pm. Enjoy nature hikes and roasted marshmallows. Bring hot dogs for your family if you like. Pre-registration is necessary and you will be notified in case of cancellation. If you would like to get in on some of the other activities that this Center has, give them a call at 301-297-4575 (TTY) 301-699-2544.
Clearwater Nature Center is having a wildlife fundraiser on December 6, from 7 to 9 pm, for age 28 and up. There will be a coffee house with pastries, and an open mike for those who would like to sing, tell a story, or recite poetry. Cost is $5, for residents, and $6 for non-residents. For reservations, call 301-297-4575.
Brandywine Democratic Club will meet November 6 at the Brandywine Fire House. Meeting will start promptly at 8 pm. Our speaker will be Shaihi Mwalimu, Vice Chair of the Civilian Complaint Oversight Panel, which reviews complaints against members of he police department. Call me if you need any more information.
On November 15, Bethany Christian Church will be having a Craft Bazaar from 9 am to 2 pm. There will be free coffee from 9 to 10 am, handicrafts, a bake sale, Rada candles and cutlery, Santa's attic, and lunch. Along with this, there will be a children's make-it, take-it room. Call 301-248-4600 for more information.
At the last Ft. Washington/Accokeek Democratic Club meeting, the speaker was Delegate Darryl A. Kelly, from the 26th District. He gave us a newsletter that he had prepared giving the Legislative Wrap-Up after his first session in Annapolis. Subjects in this newsletter were the budget, education, and litter. Mr. Kelly had some ideas that he felt were worth pursuing, and he told us about some of the bills that were passed concerning stalking and child abuse. I will keep this newsletter around for a while, in case you want to call me about any of these issues.
The African American Civil War Museum at 1200 U Street, NW will celebrate First Saturday Descendants' Day on Saturday, November 1 at 11 am. Harold (Hari) Jones, curator of the museum, writer, retired Marine Captain, and poet will be the speaker. Hari is a descendant of Edward Whitfield (838-192?) who fought with the First Mississippi Cavalry of African Descent. After President Lincoln authorized the establishment of the Bureau of US Colored Troops, the First Mississippi Cavalry of African Descent became the Third Mississippi Cavalry, US Colored Troops. Hari will address the organization of African Descent units prior to May 22, 1863 and the role they played as scouts and spies.
The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial has been in existence 12 years. The Memorial honors all of America's federal, state and local law enforcers. It was dedicated on October 15, 1991 by President George Bush, who said "Carved on these walls is the story of America, of a continuing quest to preserve both democracy and decency, and to protect a national treasure that we call the American dream." Visit www.nleomf.com for more information.
What you eat affects your risk of cancer and other chronic diseases. A diet that features 5 to 10 servings of vegetables and fruits per day can cut cancer risk by 20 percent, even before it is rounded out by whole grains and beans. Combine the healthy diet with exercise and weight control, and the risk is reduced by 30 to 40 percent. Portion size has gotten out of control in this country at the same time as overweight and obesity are skyrocketing. By gradually reducing portion sizes, most people can stabilize or even lose weight.
Marietta House Museum is holding a living history demonstration of Confederate soldiers during the Civil War, including camping, cooking, uniforms and military drills, on November 1 and 2 from noon to 4 pm. This is a free event. For information, call 301-464-5291 (TTY) 301-699-2544.
The American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars will properly dispose of unwanted or unserviceable American and Maryland State flags. Flags that are faded, shredded, tattered or torn can be dropped off at local posts. Call 410-526-5075.
Accokeek Fire Department is holding a flea market this Saturday, November 1, beginning at 7 am. Tables are available. Call 301-283-4456.
Forty percent of the people at your party will snoop in your medicine cabinet.
