The National Cancer Institute recently set a high bar: the elimination of suffering and premature death from cancer by 2015. If this goal is achieved, within the next 12 years, many cancers will be eliminated and others controlled, so that people can live with and not die from cancer. Today, most cancer experts are beginning to view recurrent and advanced cancer as chronic illnesses, similar to diabetes, heart disease, or by hypertension, that can be managed, rather than as illnesses that are likely to be fatal. So-called smart drugs, given in combination, or in sequence, can often stabilize the cancer. People treated in this manner can often live for many years, possibly even decades, with a good quality of life. In addition, patients are spared the nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and other side effects often associated with chemotherapy and radiation. This information is from the Johns Hopkins newsletter, "Health After 50."
Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, I hope you have all done your bit to remind your friends to check their breasts, and make an appointment for a mammogram. It is important for the men to check their breasts, too, since breast cancer can also happen to them.
